Notes:
George Freeman Chalmers Sr.
Birth year 1836:
1860 Federal Census gives his age as 34 years. Since the date of the census was 02 Jun 1860, this would indicate a birth date somewhere between 03 Jun 1835 and 02 Jun 1836.
His Civil War draft registration (U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865, Ohio, Vol 4, page 35, line 11) gives his age as 27 years. This record lists his age on 01 Jul 1863 and would thus render the birth date between 02 Jul 1835 and 01 Jul 1836.
Birth year 1833:
1870 Federal census gives age as 37 years. Since the date of the census was 06 Jul 1870, this would indicate a birth date somewhere between 05 Jul 1832 and 06 Jul 1833.
The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, Vol. 2 , page 29, line 12, gives his age as 28 years. This would indicate a birth date somewhere between 06 Sep 1832 and 05 Sep 1833.
Birth place:
Ohio: 1860 Federal Census.
Alabama: 1870 Federal census.
Florida: Civil War draft registration.
Eva A. Chalmers
Birth Date:
The birth date listed is calculated from the death record: age 26 yrs., 5 mo., 11 days, with a death date of 05 Feb 1885.
The ages given in the federal censuses would seem to preclude the above date:
The 1860 census gives an age of 2 years with a record date of 02 Jun 1860 which would give a birth date between 03 Jun 1857 and 02 Jun 1858.
The 1870 census gives an age of 13 years with a record date of 06 Jul 1870 which would give a birth date between 07 Jul 1856 and 06 Jul 1857.
The 1880 census gives an age of 22 years with a record date of 11 Jun 1880 which would give a birth date between 12 Jun 1857 and 11 Jun 1858.
A birth date of 18 Jun 1858 can be calculated from Eva's headstone: age 26 yrs., 7 mo., 18 days, with a death date of 05 Feb 1885. The ages given in the federal censuses would also seem to preclude this birth date.
Maria Caroline 'Callie' Chalmers
Birth Date:
The actual birth date is undetermined. The birth date listed (15 May 1858) is from her death certificate. We do know she is the second child born after Eva who was one to two years older.
The 1860 census would give a calculated birth date between 03 Jun 1858 and 2 Jun 1859.
The 1870 census would give a calculated birth date between 07 Jul 1858 and 06 Jul 1859.
The 1880 census would give a calculated birth date between 02 Jun 1858 and 01 Jun 1859.
The 1900 census, however, gives a direct birth date of May 1858.
The 1910 census would give a calculated birth date between 16 Apr 1859 and 15 Apr 1860.
The 1920 census would give a calculated birth date between 29 Jan 1856 and 28 Jan 1857.
Emma Chalmers
The birth date was calculated from the Obituary. The obituary was published on 23 Dec 1892 which was a Friday. The death had occurred on Monday which would have been 19 Dec 1892. Since she was 31 yrs., 7 mo., and 4 days old at her death, this calculates to a birth date of 15 May 1861. This is, of course, subject to further verification.
George Freeman Chalmers Jr.
The estimate for the Chalmers-Boyd marriage date is derived from the census population schedules.
Edward N. Chalmers
Edward's marriage record with Lizzie Johnston lists him as a hotel manager in Havana, Cuba.
